Computer Skills Training

"Computing is not about computers any more. It is about living."
~ Nicholas Negroponte, founder of the One Laptop Per Child, a non-profit association which distributes computers to children in developing nations to provide them with access to knowledge and opportunities to "explore, experiment and express."

SkillSource offers a variety of computer skills training opportunities. Classes are small and may be instructor-led or self-paced. Offerings may vary between offices. Call your local office today to find out how you can get the computer training you need.

Piloting Your PC

Piloting Your PC (Personal Computer) is a 3-half-day instructor-led workshop to help the novice computer user get off the ground and "pilot your PC" with confidence.

Digital Literacy

The goal of Digital Literacy is to teach and assess basic computer concepts and skills so that people can use computer technology in everyday life to develop new social and economic opportunities for themselves, their families, and their communities. The self-paced web-based curriculum, developed and presented by Microsoft, is freely available to anyone, anywhere. SkillSource-enrolled learners have access to computers, high-speed Internet and instructor support for course completion.

Learners who complete all five Digital Literacy Standard courses or similar experience can take the Digital Literacy Certificate Test, which consists of 30 questions that cover key points from the five Digital Literacy courses. Learners with a passing score will attain a Digital Literacy Certificate.

In an increasingly digital world, where virtually every field and function is impacted by computers, IC³ certification can help learners refine their aptitudes in the most important and valuable areas. The Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³®) provides students and job-seekers with the foundation of knowledge they need to succeed in environments that require the use of computers and the Internet. The Global Standard 3 is an internationally recognized standard for digital literacy and reflects the most relevant skills needed in today's academic and business environments.

Training is on-campus, self-paced and web-based. SkillSource is a certified Certiport testing center, and exams can be taken on site.

Individuals seeking IC³ certification are required to take and pass all three IC³ exams: Computing Fundamentals, Key Applications, and Living Online.

  • Computing Fundamentals covers a foundational understanding of computer hardware, software, operating systems, peripherals, and troubleshooting to help you get the most value and impact from computer technology.
  • Key Applications covers popular word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications and the common features of all applications to help you learn faster, work smarter, and present yourself better.
  • Living Online covers skills for working in an Internet or networked environment and maximizing your communication, education, collaboration and social interaction in a safe and ethical way.
