The right path is the one you’re on.

June 2025 – June marks a season of celebration for students across North Central Washington, and this year, SkillSource had much to celebrate. In Okanogan, Othello, and Wenatchee, over 45 student graduates who participated in SkillSource’s Open Doors and ALE (Alternative Learning Experience) programs joined their peers in walking across the stage to receive diplomas or GEDs, many the first in their families to do so.

On June 9, Okanogan High School hosted a heartfelt commencement ceremony for students from the Okanogan School District’s Outreach and Alternative Schools, including those enrolled in the Open Doors program based in Omak. The evening included a welcome from Principal Roy Johnson, the traditional Okanogan Honor Song led by Tony Marchand and local Tribal members, a presentation of stoles to Colville youth by Tashina Gorr of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, and remarks from Superintendent Steve Quick.

Just days later, the celebrations continued at a combined graduation for our Open Doors students in Othello, and a commencement ceremony for Chelan-Douglas graduates in Wenatchee. The regional commencement honored graduates of both the Wenatchee Learning Center and adult learners who completed their diplomas or GEDs through SkillSource’s partnership with Wenatchee Valley College. The ceremony opened with inspiring words from Mike Dacey, SkillSource Youth Program Supervisor, who told graduates:

“You chose to push forward, to learn, and to grow. That takes immense courage, and it’s a testament to the strength within every one of you … The world is truly yours for the taking.”

Three student speakers—Sari Brown, Tucker Miles, and Jesus Ayala—shared personal stories of perseverance and growth. Instructors from SkillSource presented diplomas to youth and adult graduates, a tradition that underscores the deep connection between students and their mentors.

A solemn moment was shared as an honorary diploma was presented to the family of Kolton Simmons, a SkillSource youth participant whose life was tragically cut short in a car accident earlier this spring. His absence was felt deeply, and his memory honored with heartfelt applause.

These ceremonies reflect the heart of SkillSource’s mission: to meet students where they are, support them with care and consistency, and guide them toward their goals—whether that’s earning a high school credential, continuing to college or trade school, beginning an apprenticeship, or entering the workforce with confidence. From Open Doors sites in Omak, Othello, and Wenatchee to partnerships with Wenatchee Valley College, the paths may vary, but the outcomes speak volumes.

Congratulations to the Class of 2025! Your success is our shared celebration.
