After years of wrestling with health challenges and being underemployed, Heather found herself at a crossroads. Working just four hours weekly as a driver for a local car dealership wasn’t enough, so when she was back on her feet health-wise, she sought her Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to pave the way for a promising career.
At a SkillSource orientation Heather learned about the various support services and financial incentives that might be available to help her transition from underemployment. She excelled in the ACE Workshop, demonstrating exceptional basic skills and a natural aptitude for mechanical work. She enrolled in MTZ CDL Academy in Quincy for her CDL training, and SkillSource paid for tuition for school and gas for the commute to training.
Through informational interviews with trucking companies, Heather discovered they sought qualities she embodied—reliability, self-motivation, and an unwavering work ethic. She earned her CDL on schedule. But finding a full-time driving position took some time due to her lack of experience in her new field. Heather was eligible for a performance incentive through the State Economic Security for All (EcSA) which helped her pay for bills during her job search.
Her determination paid off! Central Washington Asphalt hired Heather as a full-time truck driver in July, offering $26 per hour, 40 hours a week. Her Career Trainer, James Beck, gave her more good news. Heather qualified for an additional $1,000 monthly employment retention incentive, a perfect opportunity to build financial security while advancing in her new career.
“James has been PHENOMENAL and keeps finding new ways to make my life better!” Heather exclaimed. “He is a Godsend and I am beyond thankful for him and SkillSource!”
Through perseverance, determination, and the support from workforce development programs and partners, Heather’s life has transformed, proving that with the right resources and resolve, life-changing success is possible.
