Fueling Student Growth and Community Success

Internships are more than a resume booster. When thoughtfully designed and strategically placed, they help employers build their future workforce and give students like Octavio a real-world head start.

Octavio, a junior at Washington State University majoring in Finance and minoring in Agriculture, knew he wanted experience that bridged both worlds. With help from SkillSource and the Community Reinvestment Project, he was connected to a paid internship at Stemilt Growers, a Wenatchee-based leader in tree fruit production and shipping.

Through a collaboration between SkillSource Career Counselor Toby Haberlock and Stemilt’s Director of HR, Zach Williams, the opportunity aligned seamlessly. After meeting Octavio and learning more about his background and goals, Stemilt’s team brought him on as an Accounting Intern.

Over the course of his 180-hour internship, Octavio supported real business needs in the finance department. He assisted with account reconciliations, general ledger entries, and learned processes that strengthened his technical and professional skills. His supervisor, Carly, tailored the experience to ensure alignment with his academic strengths and career goals, while giving him insight into the practical operations of a major agricultural employer.

This internship not only gave Octavio valuable work experience, but it also gave Stemilt another opportunity to invest in the next generation of talent while meeting real business needs. Carly added “Octavio really contributed his skills to support our finance team assisting with daily tasks that kept our operations running smoothly.” For Octavio, it was a chance to grow professionally, build confidence, and expand his network within the industry.

With plans to finish school and possibly study abroad, Octavio leaves this internship with clearer direction, a stronger resume, and a professional network he can build on.

Internships create win-win scenarios across industries. By matching driven students with real business needs, they help shape career paths while strengthening our local workforce.

Congratulations, Octavio! SkillSource wishes you continued success in all academic and professional pursuits.
