If ever there were an organization whose name perfectly illustrated their mission, it’s New Hope. Their mission is to connect with survivors of domestic abuse and restore justice, provide hope, and unite communities to build stronger alliances for a safer world. New Hope offers critical support to people during dark and trying times, which means they must hire staff who demonstrate unique and appropriate characteristics and skills.
Sandra Cruz is a single mom of two and was looking for employment; more than a job, she wanted to find a career. She researched New Hope online and learned of their services, and was immediately inspired. “What they do here is just amazing,” she said. “The services they provide and the people they help are incredible.” Sandra applied for a position with New Hope as Administrative Assistant.
New Hope saw in Sandra the unique skills needed for the position, though additional training was needed. New Hope reached out to SkillSource to explore Sandra’s eligibility for on-the-job training. On-the-job training would equip Sandra with essential skills for managing the front lines, including how to screen clients to connect them with the appropriate advocate, greet walk-ins to provide assistance, and specific training for assisting victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Sandra has now completed her training, and is working full-time for New Hope as their Administrative Assistant. Her role as the first point of contact is critical, and according to her supervisor, Alyce, she excels in crisis intervention. “It takes a special person to fill that role, and Sandra has demonstrated the necessary skills,” Alyce said, adding that she is extremely happy and grateful to have Sandra on the team.
To assist in her transition to full time employment, Sandra is also eligible to receive Employee Retention Incentives, which means she earns a monthly financial incentive over the next 90 days of employment, which helps with everyday expenses for her and her children as she transitions to receiving a regular salary.
“The on-the-job training was a wonderful experience. I’m used to starting new positions independently, but with SkillSource, I had the support I needed from my trainer while adjusting to the role.”
What a great match. Congratulations to Sandra and to New Hope! We’re grateful for your compassion and service.
